Our Year 10 BTEC dance students recently had the unforgettable opportunity to attend a performance of Chicago at the iconic Palace Theatre. This Broadway-calibre production offered a unique and thrilling experience, allowing students to see their current studies brought to life by world-class performers. The trip was chaperoned by Miss Schofield and Mrs Carinci, who were equally excited to witness the dazzling showcase of song, dance and drama alongside their students.

From the moment the lights dimmed and the opening notes of ‘All That Jazz’ filled the theatre, the students were captivated. Watching the sleek, sophisticated choreography and precise dance techniques they had been studying in class, they couldn’t help but be inspired by the talented cast on stage. Their favourite routines included the sultry ‘All That Jazz’, the powerful ‘Cell Block Tango’ and the humorous, puppet-like movements in ‘We Both Reached for the Gun’. The energy and intensity of the dancers left a lasting impression, giving students a real-life perspective on the dedication and skill required to perform at this level.

Throughout the performance, the students demonstrated exemplary behaviour, representing the school admirably. During the interval, they struck up conversations with other audience members, enthusiastically sharing their thoughts on the show, discussing their favourite dances and even generously offering chocolate and sweets. Their excitement and passion for dance were evident, sparking warm interactions with members of the public who shared their love for the performance.

Miss Schofield, who found the fierce choreography of ‘Cell Block Tango’ particularly inspiring, said the scene was ‘a masterclass in storytelling through dance’. Meanwhile, Mrs Carinci enjoyed ‘Roxie’, a playful and imaginative solo that brought humour and charm to the stage. Both teachers expressed how proud they were of the students for their engagement and enthusiasm, noting that this experience would enrich their studies and deepen their appreciation for the art of dance.

The trip was a memorable blend of entertainment, learning, and community, leaving students and teachers alike buzzing with excitement long after the final curtain call. This trip was more than just a trip; it was a valuable educational experience that brought the year 10 dance curriculum to life in a way that only live performance can.
